Declaration on the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Jurnal Ilmu Sosial dan Humaniora (JISHUM) permits the responsible and transparent use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in scholarly publishing, provided that such use complies with the principles of academic integrity, research ethics, copyright protection, confidentiality, and data security. Authors bear full responsibility for the originality, accuracy, validity, and integrity of their manuscripts. The use of AI tools does not diminish the authors’ responsibility for the scholarly quality, critical analysis, interpretation, and conclusions presented in their work. Authors must ensure that all content submitted to JISHUM is carefully verified, appropriately referenced, and consistent with established academic and ethical standards. Generative AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors because they cannot assume responsibility for the content, approve the final manuscript, or fulfill authorship obligations, including copyright and licensing requirements. Human authors remain fully accountable for all aspects of their submissions, including any content produced or assisted by AI tools.
Permitted Uses of Generative AI
JISHUM permits the use of Generative AI tools for the following purposes, provided that authors critically review and verify the results:
- Idea generation and exploration: Supporting the initial exploration of research ideas, research questions, and potential approaches to a topic.
- Language improvement: Improving grammar, spelling, readability, clarity, and academic language, including assistance with translation.
- Literature exploration and classification: Assisting with the identification, organization, and preliminary classification of relevant literature, provided that all sources are independently verified.
- Research support: Supporting preliminary information searches, outlining, and the organization of research materials without replacing the authors’ critical judgment or scholarly analysis.
Authors must verify all AI-generated information, references, quotations, and interpretations before including them in a manuscript. AI-generated references must not be cited unless the cited sources have been independently located and verified.
Disclosure Requirements
Authors who use Generative AI tools in preparing their manuscripts must disclose such use transparently in the Materials and Methods section or in a separate Declaration of Generative AI Use statement, as appropriate to the nature of the manuscript.
The declaration must include:
- The full name of the AI tool and its version, where available.
- The specific purpose for which the tool was used.
- A description of how the tool was used in preparing the manuscript.
- The extent of human review, verification, and revision of the AI-assisted output.
Authors are not required to declare the use of basic spelling, grammar, or reference-management tools that do not generate substantive content, unless otherwise required by the journal.
Failure to disclose substantive AI use may be considered a breach of publication ethics and may result in editorial action in accordance with the journal’s policies.
Prohibited Uses of Generative AI
JISHUM prohibits the use of Generative AI in ways that undermine research integrity, replace essential scholarly responsibilities, or compromise the reliability of published research. Prohibited practices include, but are not limited to:
- Fabricating, falsifying, or inappropriately modifying research data, findings, or evidence.
- Generating synthetic data to replace missing or unavailable research data without a scientifically justified, transparent, and methodologically appropriate procedure.
- Producing abstracts, results, conclusions, references, or supplementary materials containing fabricated, misleading, or unverified information.
- Submitting AI-generated text without adequate critical review, verification, and substantive revision by the authors.
- Using AI-generated content to misrepresent the authors’ research activities, expertise, findings, or original scholarly contributions.
- Using AI tools to generate or manipulate research images, figures, or other evidentiary materials in ways that misrepresent the underlying data or findings.
AI-assisted preparation of tables, charts, illustrations, computer code, formulas, or other research materials must not compromise the accuracy, authenticity, reproducibility, or transparency of the research. Any AI-assisted visual or analytical material must be appropriately disclosed when relevant, and the authors must retain responsibility for verifying its accuracy and integrity.
Responsibilities of Editors and Peer Reviewers
Editors and peer reviewers must maintain the confidentiality of all submitted manuscripts and related materials throughout the editorial and peer-review process.
Editors and peer reviewers must not upload or disclose unpublished manuscripts, manuscript excerpts, research data, figures, reviewer reports, or confidential editorial correspondence to publicly accessible or otherwise unauthorized Generative AI tools. Such use may expose confidential information, intellectual property, personal data, or unpublished research findings.
AI tools may be used for limited language assistance in preparing editorial correspondence or reviewer reports, provided that no confidential manuscript content or identifiable information is disclosed to an unauthorized system. Editors and reviewers must independently verify any AI-assisted output and remain fully responsible for the accuracy, fairness, confidentiality, and integrity of their editorial decisions and reviews.
Generative AI must not replace the independent scholarly judgment of editors or peer reviewers, nor may it be used to make final editorial or peer-review decisions.
Editorial Oversight and Accountability
JISHUM reserves the right to request clarification or additional disclosure regarding the use of Generative AI in a submitted manuscript. Where necessary, the editorial team may ask authors to provide further information concerning the use of AI tools, the verification of AI-assisted content, or the integrity of the research materials.
Failure to comply with this policy may result in a request for revision, rejection of the manuscript, or other appropriate editorial action in accordance with the journal’s publication ethics policies.
By submitting a manuscript to JISHUM, authors acknowledge that they retain full responsibility for their work and agree to comply with this declaration and all applicable research and publication ethics requirements.
